It looks like Google got tired of waiting for Apple to approve or reject the Google Voice iPhone app it submitted for consideration last June, so the company has decided to sidestep Apple completely.

This morning, Google announced a Google Voice app that works via the iPhone's built-in Web browser, rather than through the phone's operating system as standard apps do. The Web-based app can do everything Google Voice is supposed to, including make calls, send text messages, and review and listen to voice mails.

The standoff between Apple and Google over the non-approved (rejected?) Google Voice app was bitter enough to draw antitrust scrutiny from the FCC, but nothing concrete ever came of that inquiry, and the months ticked by with no Google Voice presence on the iPhone.

So Google built around the problem, using HTML5, a Web-page design language that allows Web publishers to more easily integrate sophisticated multimedia elements, such as audio and video. Built from these elements, Google's Voice app looks nearly indistinguishable from a true iPhone app.

Until you start using it.

Anyone used to making calls on a touch-tone keypad -- and that's everyone -- may be confused when, after typing in the number you'd like to call -- Google Voice pops up a box that asks if you'd like to call a different number than the one you just entered. As it turns out, this is a dial-in number for the Google Voice service itself, but this is not obvious until you look it up. Adding the number (916-538-3466 in my case) to your contacts doesn't help, either -- evidently the Web app can't access the iPhone's contact list to tell the user that this is the Google Voice dial-in number and not, say, the number to your boss' cellphone.

Texting with the app gave me similar problems -- when a friend wrote back, his number was displayed as a 406 area code, which was neither his Google Voice number nor his actual phone number. Again, it's some kind of phone line Google employs for text messages.

The fact that Google uses a bunch of intermediate numbers to channel Google Voice calls and texts around to users shouldn't be quite so obvious -- the whole point is to give users a system that mimics a normal phone without the caller needing to worry about extra steps.

That said, it may be that those awkward extra steps were precisely what it took for Google to get around Apple's stonewall.

FCC asks major telecoms — and Google — to explain early termination fees

The Federal Communications Commission today sent inquiry letters to the nation's major telecommunications firms -- and Google Inc. -- in an effort to shed light on the industry's often confusing practice of charging consumers to end their cellphone service contracts early -- so called early termination fees, or ETFs.

"We are now writing simultaneously to multiple companies to ask a standard set of questions on approaches to ETFs and their implementation," the FCC wrote to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and Google. "This is an essential step to ensuring that consumers have the information that helps them make informed choices in a competitive marketplace."

The letters included about a dozen questions on different industry practices relating to ETFs -- including a question about why the fees are necessary at all.

The fees are a penalty for ending multiyear phone contracts, during which consumers often pay wireless companies thousands of dollars for phone and data service. The revenue from those contracts in turn allows wireless providers to lure new customers by offering steep markdowns on the often-expensive smart phones. But the contracts prevent existing users from leaving their provider if they are unsatisfied with their service, or if they see a better deal elsewhere.

The inclusion of Google in the set of companies contacted by the FCC was related to the tech giant's recent launch of the Nexus One handset, the first phone marketed directly by Google. The company took some licks when observers noticed Google had attached its own $350 early termination fee to the Nexus One. Anyone who bought the phone, along with the default T-Mobile service contract -- would have to pay termination fees to Google as well as to T-Mobile -- a decision that could cost up to $550.

"The combination of ETFs from Google and T-Mobile for the Nexus One is also unique among the four major national carriers," the FCC told Google. "Consumers have been surprised by this policy and by its financial impact."

The FCC requested that the companies respond to the questions by Feb. 23, but have the option to request that their answers be treated confidentially.

The menus were basic icon / grid jobs, but the icons themselves seemed rich and colorful, and most of the features had a polished look that brought out the rich color depth of the screen.

Camera and Video:

it's the best camera on a Walkman phone yet. The Xenon flash is downgraded to standard LED but most of the other Sony Ericsson features are there, including an image stabiliser and auto focus, as well as smile detection and the marvellous BestPic, which takes seven pics in quick succession, both before and after you press the shutter, to ensure you get the best snap. There's also a 16x digital zoom, macro setting and panorama, though we found this didn't stitch the three images together as easily as some versions of this feature. Pictures were great in comparison with lesser camphones, but not quite up to the top standard of the 8 megapixel brigade – close inspection revealed a modicum of blurring and a bit too much purple fringing on the edges. It didn't seem to handle bright light particularly well either. Video provided better quality than we were expecting, though it's still a drop in standard from the still picture images.

Entertainment Features :

We tend not to dedicate space in a review to bundled software packages, but Sony Ericsson's Media Go deserves a special mention. Similar to iTunes, Media Go creates a library of media files and lets you sync these files with your handset. Unlike iTunes, Media Go does all the leg-work building your library; it will search your PC for compatible files and collect them in Video, Photo and Music categories. The most significant feature of Media Go is the capability to re-encode video files before transferring them to your phone. The W995 is capable of playing MP4 and 3GP files, so Media Go takes all your other files; DivX, Xvid, WMV, etc, and converts them to an optimised MP4 file. This process takes sometime, especially if you want the software to re-encode several feature-length movies, but not having to chase a third-party program for this functionality is a blessing.

Sony Ericsson W995 is truly a great gift for such people who are looking for handset with looks and advanced features.

Sony Ericsson has finally launched the Satio. The focus of the phone is the high class playback of music and video, as well as photography. Diffreence among mobile phones

Against the BlackBerry Curve or 8800 you don't get same email satisfaction, nor the hard keyboard if you're looking to type anything of any worth (there's the satnav as well if you count the 8800).

Keyboard versus keyboard, the BlackBerry does win out every time, that's not to say the iPhone keyboard is completely useless, it's certainly good for any on-screen keypad typing web URLs and text messages, even short emails, but a decent typer it isn't. No matter what Apple's says, on-screen is still on-screen, if you know what we mean.

So what against the Nokia N95? Well the iPhone doesn't have GPS receiver built-in, or the 5 megapixel camera with video capabilities and Flickr and Vox plug-ins. The music offering and software interface is certainly better however. The iPhone connectivity with iTunes (version 7.3 of course) is a breeze and anyone who has used an iPod will be right at home with the music software. Additionally Google Maps although sucking power like a leech is also very good. You just don't get GPS.

So what about against the newly announced HTC Touch? Well it's considerably bigger but that's about it with the Touch really only winning on greater connectivity for business users (think enterprise) and that size.

Against the LG Prada? Well it's clear having now played with both that they are clearly marketed at different people. The Prada is for people who just want a phone.

However, functionality and experience quality often come first in the users' wish lists. Get ready to see if the Optimus GT540 will ultimately rise victorious like a true Optimus Prime, or will ultimately fall in the battle for the love of customers.

LG is really walking a knife edge with these resistive touch screens it places in its smartphones. The 3" panel in the GT540 is definitely one of the better resistive screens we have used, but the experience can by no means be compared to that of the increasingly popular capacitive displays. Anyway, at least the image quality is very good, not only because of the utilized HVGA resolution, which works great on that screen size, but also thanks to the very rich and saturated colors. We even wondered if it is not AMOLED at one point, but once we looked at it from an angle, we realized we were dreaming. It has internal storage capacity of 130 MB. External Card slot microSD & it can expand up to 32GB.

Camera and Video:

The phone’s 3MP camera supports geo-tagging, auto face-tagging and face-to-action technology to allow users to create and share multimedia content from the phone. The LG Optimus has a included video editor with storyboard function so that users can add music and text to videos directly on the phone.

Amazingly, the LG Optimus GT540 is a rational multimedia smartphone. We were pleasantly surprised at how smooth the scrolling was. After few month wait, the iPhone has finally launched in the US but has it been worth the wait? Pocket-lint went State side to try it out.

Having lived with the phone for the weekend there is no denying the fact that it's large and minimalist at the same time. The new mobile phone from Apple is, it has to be said, a thing of beauty. Apple has created a device that many will lust after.

Like Motorola with the RAZR, there is no doubt that this phone will change the industry's approach to how users interact with their mobile for the better.

So where is the catch? Has it been worth the wait for the Americans and what about us Brits with still another 4 months to go? Well yes and no. For every two good elements to the phone there are plenty of cons.

Going for it is that large crisp bright touchscreen, the touch sensitive controls including zooming into pictures with just two fingers, the 4GB or 8GB hard drive for your MP3 tracks and movies, Coverflow application, the inclusion of a digital camera, the ability to access voice messages out of sequence, the Wi-Fi connectivity and of course the software interaction including YouTube, Google Maps and Apple's Safari internet browser.

But then there is the bad; no 3G connectivity, no video mode for the digital camera, no zoom for the digital camera, no flash for the digital camera, Bluetooth only works with headsets rather than allowing file transfer, there is no removable memory, the headphone jack has been recessed into the device meaning your regular headphones are unlikely to fit, there is no video out even with a third party docking station, no voice recording, no instant message application, no support for custom ringtones, no flash or java support, no support for third party applications beyond the web browser, no hard QWERTY keyboard, it doesn't work with the 64-bit version of Windows, the price is very expensive and finally the fact that it's all been done before.

So how does it compare to other handsets on the market?

That sounds like a small upgrade - few people have complained that the older model is a slowcoach but the benefits can most clearly be seen in the way your apps boot up faster and run more smoothly.

We're always a little bit suspicious of "celebrity brand" phones, as they are often just a big name slapped on a cheap phone in order to turn a return. The PUMA PHONE is a little bit unusual, because this phone is rather interesting in its own right. Although this phone being made by Sagem, it's a pretty incredible device the specs are decent enough, but the overall experience of using one is amazing. It's been styled to an inch of its life, with every corner of the custom OS looking like it's stepped out of a graphic designer's wet dream.

Size and Weight :

The PUMA PHONE weighs 115 grams and measures a pocket-friendly 102 x 56 x 13mm. And the handset is home to 2.8 inches.

Network and connectivity:

The PUMA PHONE comes with GPS, 3.5G support, a multimedia player, FM radio and a 3.5mm audio socket. There's Bluetooth 2.1 and USB connectivity. One most important missing component is WiFi, but other than this the PUMA PHONE is a fully featured touchscreen device. As a phone, the Puma has HSDPA 3G and GSM/Edge connectivity, plus Bluetooth.

Memory and Display:

Tthe screen that lets the hardware down—it's a 2.8-inch QVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen with 240 x 320 pixels, and while it was responsive it just wasn't the sharpest picture we've seen on a phone. It may do with the fact that every single screen is bright red, but even looking at Dylan, the Puma Phone's pet puma, who strolls past the screen roaring at you, it was a bit of a muddy image.

Camera and Video:

Shooting photos on the 3.2-megapixel camera was attractive similar to the familiarity of using an Android phone very easy to use, and the LED flash and 6x digital zoom worked well too. It took a few snaps in the bright strip lighting-lit room and they were clear with no noticeable complaints. It also handles video conferencing at VGA resolution

Entertainment Features:

Puma claims one hour in the sun can supply a fantastic 17 minutes talktime, 35 texts and two hours music playback and the eco-conscious can easily keep tabs on how many calls, music and messages they’ve inspired off the back of the le soleil through the main menu sun icon. The user interface makes heavy use of red, white and black colours and very flat looking white on red icons right through, something based on PUMA's corporate colour scheme.

The PUMA PHONE itself is manufactured by Sagem, a company not normally linked with this degree of sophistication. Puma Phone definitely stands out from the touchphone slop. It’s not just the sun-seeking tech or its sporty side that gives this phone its individual personality but also those rude graphic details and animations. There’s room for upgrading but Puma’s debut handset still has major appeal outside of the smartphone composition.

SAMSUNG OMNIA --classic style

There's a lot of room for media on here: 16GB of internal memory, plus a slot behind the back cover for a MicroSD card up to 32GB. No card is included, but our 16GB SanDisk card worked fine. The screen is by far the phones best feature. The Captivates 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display is bright, like really bright. Colors explode off the screen, watching movies is a treat, and the extra screen real estate makes browsing the web really enjoyable. The resolution is 480 x 800 and displays 16 million colors, for those of you wondering. The touch sensitivity on the device is very good, although we did have lag issues with certain keyboard layouts (that we’ll cover later in the review). Samsung’s Super AMOLED display and the iPhone 4’s Retina display could battle to the death for the top smartphone screen crown… and we wouldn’t care who won. Both screens are simply amazing.

Entertainment Features:

Even without reformatting through Kies or WMP, the Captivate plays an unusually wide range of video formats. Along with the usual standard-def MPEG4 and WMV video, I was pleasantly shocked to find that H.264/AAC and XVID videos played, even high-def 720p files, and that there seemed to be an option for simulated 5.1 surround sound. AT&T will sell a component video cable for the Captivate that can play videos in 720p on an HDTV. The phone also offering one-stop shopping for all your updates, the Samsung Social Hub all your social networking services, messages, personal and business e-mail, calendars and contacts. It's built around Messaging and Contacts, both of which initiate the sending and receiving of information--whether it is e-mail, instant messaging, social network updates or SMS messages. Additionally, calendar information from portal calendars, such as Google Calendar, and social networking services are displayed together in one calendar with two-way synchronization.

The device’s heavily customized UI really does tax the phones list of impressive resources at times. And for this reason alone we are not overly impressed with the Captivate. This phone could be a case study of how marginal software can taint the experience of an amazing piece of hardware (we’re talking about TouchWiz 3.0, not Android).

Sharp FX

Sharp is not a company that's in the headlines very often in the cellphone world, but the company is relatively successful in the Japanese phone market, and it used to make SideKick phones for T-Mobile and this Sharp FX clearly reminds us of a sidekick... Just like its cousin, the Sharp FX is a "texter" phone that will be sold primarily to send SMS and emails, in addition to voice calls of course.

Size and weight:

The Sharp FX looks a few decades old, with its cluttered design, sharp edges, and numerous accent grooves. It measures 4.5 by 2.2 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs a slightly hefty 5 ounces.

Network and connectivity:

The FX is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and tri-band HSDPA (850/1900/2100 MHz) device, meaning that it hits 3G data speeds here and overseas. Voice quality was quite good—when it was working, which wasn't often. Reception was unusually poor; while I tested the FX in a rural part of Massachusetts, this phone simply couldn't complete calls that a nearby iPhone could.

Memory and Display:

It has a build in memory of 80MB. External Memory type microSD card slot that can be used to expand memory up to 64 GB. The back of the phone is simplistic in feel, as it contains only the camera lens and speaker grill. The front panel of the device houses the 3-inch screen with a WQVGA display that has a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. Some have said that the colors on the screen look slightly washed out, but I didn't notice that at all. In fact, the screen looks brilliant in my eyes. Granted, it's no Super AMOLED display, but it is definitely a step up from the basic TFT LCD screens that have become standard these days. There is a large bezel area around the screen which may bother some. This is really a personal thing, but it's worth noting. Underneath the display are the Send/Talk, Back/Menu, and End/Power keys. These are hard physical keys that work perfectly.

Camera and Video:

It contains a 2.0-megapixel camera with camcorder & digital zoom. The 2 megapixel camera took "okay" photos, but I would be expecting something much better on a device that costs as much as the Sharp FX does. The camera is operational with no autofocus or flash. The camera specs are almost a slap in the face for a device with this potential and price tag. However, it's there and pictures are decent. Close-up shots come out better than shots from a distance of more than six inches. The camera also captures video though it is only in VGA resolution. Though it doesn't have autofocus, it is equipped with a 4x digital zoom. Overall, I would expect better, but it is enough.

Entertainment Features:

The Sharp FX features threaded text messaging with each message being displayed as a speech bubble. It was aesthetically pleasing enough and the interface was simple. The Sharp FX ships with Opera Mini, which means that web browsing will be slightly improved over other messaging phones on the market. Strangely though, the web browser only works in landscape mode. However, speeds were fast enough, though I wouldn't recommend it for any heavy duty surfing. The phone comes with a YellowPages app and a Facebook app which should cut down the need for the web browser dramatically. Both of these apps functioned surprisingly well and the Facebook app almost made me feel like I was using a smartphone. The media player supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, AMR, MIDI, Music recognition,Video Playback. It also has FM Radio.

Microsoft KIN TWO

The display can also show 16M colors. The Kin Two packs an impressive 8GB of on board storage, which is room for about 2000 songs that the user can play through its built in Zune media player. Unfortunately, there isn’t a SDcard slot on the Kin Two – so users will have to make do with 8GB. It also has a 256 MB of RAM.

Camera and Video:

The Kin Two's 8-megapixel camera includes a flash and geotags photos with your location (even indoors), but I had real trouble getting non-blurry photos out of it. Part of the problem is the extremely poorly-placed camera button. If you put one finger on the button and the other finger on the other side of the phone, as is natural, you're covering the camera lens. The alternative is to move one of your hands, and then the camera wobbles a lot. When I did, rarely, get a sharp picture, it was bright, clear, and free of artifacts—I wish I had been able to take more. I had better results with the Kin Two's 720p video camera, which took smooth if somewhat blown-out videos.

Entertainment Features:

Under an icon marked "Music & More," you can access a full set of Zune functions, and they work just like a Zune. To get music and video on or off the Kin, you sync it with the Zune Player on a PC or with upcoming Mac software that Microsoft pledges to make available soon. I found music, videos, podcasts and photos synced two ways, and they sounded good both over wired and Bluetooth headsets. Even HD videos played well, scaled down to the Kin Two's screen size. The KIN TWO is the first Windows Phone to feature a Zune-powered music and video experience, which also provides FM radio and podcast playback. Microsoft’s Kin phones are now available for pre-order on Verizon and I’ve been playing around with the Kin One for a while. Unlike the other reviews you may have seen we did the crazy thing and actually used it in real life for more than a few hours. With its unique design, solid software and cheap price, the Kin One is an interesting device.

Size and weight:

Its dimension 82.6 x 63.5 x 19.1 mm & weight 110.6g.

Network and connectivity:

It supports 2G Network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) & 3G Network (HSDPA 900 / 2100). Its connectivity features are GPRS (Class 10, 32 - 48 kbps), EDGE (Class 10, 236.8 kbps), 3G 9HSDPA 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA 2 Mbps), WLAN Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), Bluetooth (v2.1 with A2DP), USB (microUSB v2.0).

Memory and Display:

The 2.6-inch QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) capacitive touch screen display looks sharp, whether browsing the web or shifting between pictures, and it holds up well even at an angle. Colors quickly wash out in direct sunlight, but the generally high-contrast UI design means the phone is still workable. The touch screen aspect also worked well: Taps appeared more precisely pointed than on other devices I've used, and the screen's covering seamlessly blends with the rest of the case -- quite appealing both visually and physically.It has a 4 GB of internal memory (not expandable).

Camera and Video:

The Kin One's 5-megapixel camera geotags photos with your location (even indoors), but it isn't the best phone camera out there. In low light, images got blurry easily. Outdoors, focus felt soft and light sources seemed to overwhelm the sensor. The Kin One's video mode records washed-out but sharp VGA videos.

Entertainment Features:

The KIN ONE is the first Windows Phone to feature a Zune-powered music and video experience, which also provides FM radio and podcast playback. Verizon DROID 2

Android Power blogger JR Raphael posts Verizon's multimedia files for the Droid 2. That's Verizon's (VZ) unannounced original Droid replacement (pictured at right). And this is the least of Verizon's leak concerns.

The Verizon Samsung Gusto cell phone is easy to use, screen is so easy to see and the regular, keypad is large and so easy to use. A little bulky for carrying in your pocket. A nice phone for those who want simple, reliable and durable.
