Motorola MILESTONE XT720

The latest version of the Motorola Milestone, the XT720, is radically different from the original. It lacks the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but improves the camera's sensor from 5- to 8-megapixels and adds a Xenon flash. Without the keyboard, it's much thinner, but it still retains the chunky design and weighs the same. It also has the same 550MHz processor and runs Android 2.1, which supports multiple accounts, Microsoft Exchange and HTML5.

Size and Weight :
The dimensions of this phone is 116 x 60.9 x 10.9 mm & weight is 160 g.

Network and connectivity:
The networking feature of this phone is 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 & 3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100. And the connectivity features are GPRS Class 12 (32 - 48 kbps), EDGE Class 12, 3G HSDPA (10.2 Mbps); HSUPA (5.76 Mbps), WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, DLNA, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP , USB microUSB v2.0.

Camera and Video:
On the multimedia side you get that 8-megapixel camera, and 720p video recording - very handy indeed. The 8-megapixel camera is pretty impressive offering you plenty when it comes to capturing your favourite moments. That includes face detection, image stabilisation, the ability to set the ISO between 100 - 800, multi-shot mode and a series of scene modes like macro and portrait. A mechanical shutter boosts capture performance times and the touch to focus feature is very easy to use, allowing you to drag the focus to where you want it rather than opt for the centre of the screen. Pictures themselves are good with the camera coping well in most situations. This isn't going to replace your DSLR, but it will replace your basic compact from a couple of years ago. While the colours are virtually spot on, it's the focus that lets it down as the XT720's capabilities with the images tend to come out soft in most cases. We also found a fair bit of noise in our images when there was a block of one colour. As for the video you'll get 720p recording resolution, whilst the HDMI out means you can connect it to a HD-Ready TV and enjoy still images and video on the big screen. While that sounds great, in practice, it only serves to perpetuate the problems the camera has, as the camcorder element suffers from the same softness that affects the still photos.

Memory and Display:
Internal storage of this phone is 150 MB, 512 MB RAM & 512 MB ROM. Card Slot type microSD, which can be expanded up to 32GB. The 3.7in TFT touch screen offers 480 x 854-pixel resolution and generally looks lovely, though it does seem extremely prone to reflections – not a great phone when used in direct sunlight. Nice to see the screen's capacitive though, and it responded well to brushes and presses.

Entertainment Features:
A suite of Google mobile applications including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube are also integrated onto the device, as well as Motorola’s MOTONAV turn by turn navigation. It equipped with MotoNav software. Android 2.1 means voice-to-text conversion in search boxes and navigation for instance. Like many smartphones you’ll be topping this up every day, although the Milestone XT720 doesn’t seem to drain the battery as quickly. The media player supports MP3/WAV/WMA/AAC+, MP4/WMV/H.263/H.264. Other features are digital compass, TV-out (720p video) via HDMI port, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Document viewer, Photo viewer/editor, Face tagging.
