Sony Ericsson Aspen

The Sony Ericsson Aspen is a Blackberry-style Windows smartphone, and is the first handset of its type from this manufacturer. Sony Ericsson say that the Aspen is a handset with a conscience, a silly bit of marketing fluff in support of the Aspen's slightly greener than usual credentials, which place it in Sony Ericsson's "GreenHeart" range.

Connectivity includes dualband UMTS/HSPA (900/2100) and quadband GSM/EDGE, though Sony Ericsson are also prepping a triband 850/900/2100 UMTS/HSPA version for North America. It supports 2G Network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), 3G Network (HSDPA 900 / 2100), HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100. The local connectivity options of the Sony Ericsson Aspen include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and a 3.5mm audio jack, GPRS (Class 10 32 - 48 kbps), EDGE (Class 10, 236.8 kbps), 3G (HSDPA, 7.2Mbps; HSUPA, 2Mbps), WLAN Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth (v2.1 with A2DP), USB (microUSB v2.0). Aspen will be available in two versions, 900/2100 MHz and 850/900/2100 MHz.

Camera and Video:

The Aspen’s 3.15-megapixel camera lacks autofocus or a flash, and while the latter doesn’t particularly disappoint us – our disdain of LED flash units is well known – the fixed-focus makes it of limited use. The Sony Ericsson Aspen features a 2.4-inch TFT touchscreen (240×320 pixels) and 65k colors. Although the 2.4-inch display is a resistive touchscreen complete with a pull out stylus we found ourselves more often than not using the hardware keys to navigate it.

Entertainment Features:

The software is Windows Mobile 6.5.3, and it seems that Sony Ericsson have added a little polish to it by using their own "Panels" which include YouTube, Facebook, an On-The-Road Panel, CNN and Weather plus others. And of course there's all the usual stuff here such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office Mobile and windows Media Player. It supports Stereo FM radio with RDS, Games, Google Maps Latitude, Bing Maps, Skype, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter apps. The media player supports MP3/eAAC+/WAV/WMA, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player.

Sony Ericsson Aspen is the revival of the business phone line up from Sony Ericsson. After the failure of their Symbian UIQ packed business phone, they have turned to WinMo. Aspen will be available in Iconic Black and White Silver.

Sony Ericsson Spiro

Sony Ericsson announces the new Sony Ericsson Spiro mobile phone which continues the iconic award-winning Sony Ericsson Walkman phone legacy. With more than 130 million Walkman phones sold worldwide, Sony Ericsson now adds an affordable Walkman phone to its portfolio - without compromising on features. The Sony Ericsson Spiro phone features the human curvature design that is now consistent across the whole Sony Ericsson portfolio. Beautiful and timeless human curvature also incorporates an ergonomic keypad which makes the handset easy to use.

The Sony Ericsson Spiro is a slider measuring 103 x 52 x 11.5 (16) mm and weighing 115 g.

Network and connectivity:

The Spiro is a dual band GSM phone, with limited data connection options, restricted to just GPRS and EDGE. This suffices for general web browsing, but you wouldn’t want to be attempting any downloads of any kind. A good option here would be to use the Opera Mini browser, which offers superior experience browsing on low speed data networks. It supports GSM / GPRS / EDGE 900 / 1800 and GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850 / 1900.

Camera and Video:

The Spiro can take photos and shoot videos on its 2-megapixel camera. Although basic by smartphone standards, having the option to take fun snaps, should the mood take you, is also a good addition.

Memory and Display:

Storage space should be more than enough on the phone as with a microSD card the Spiro can hold up to 16GB, onboard memory is 5MB. The screen is a standard QVGA TFT display, supporting up to 256,000 colours, measuring 2.2 inches point to point.

The Samsung B3410W Chat is a mobile phone which has been designed complete with easy communication features such as call features, messaging features & social network Internet access. Samsung say that the B3410W does come with a useful amount of internal memory, either 1GB or 2GB depending on specification. It also takes microSD cards up to an additional 16GB. It has a Hybrid Touch, sliding QWERTY keyboard, 2.6-inch touchscreen display with resolution of 320×240 pixels (QVGA). It can shows 256K colors on its display.

Entertainment Features :

Social networking support includes Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and others, and usefully the Ch@t's built-in WiFi means that these sites can be accessed without incurring data charges. Blackberry 9300 Gemini

First there was “Pluto,” then were was “Magnum,” but now we’re talkin’ about something totally different Gemini. The BlackBerry Gemini 9300, which introduces a larger screen and 3G capability to what looks very much like the existing Curve model. As a dedicated Blackberry user, this new model looks nice, but it's not that big of a thrill.

Network and connectivity:

The BlackBerry 9300 is believed to have quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) support, alongside tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100MHz) support with HSDPA for high-speed data. WiFi might be on board, as well as a built-in GPS receiver, though neither of those have been confirmed. Blackberry 9300 Gemini Deals also gives the user high speed Internet facility so that you can surf net more faster. This handset also have features like GPRS, GSM, EDGE and triband UMTS/HSPDA.

Camera and Video:

Camera specs were not confirmed as well, but you can bet you’re looking at 3.2 megapixels or better. Digital zoom and auto focus are the significant features associated with the camera in this mobile phone. Video recording can be done by the camera of this phone.

Memory and Display:

It has expandable memory via micro SD card that improves the features of the gadget. Its screen will be larger and the resolution suspected higher than that of the Blackberry 8900s 2.4 inch TFT screen and 480x360 pixels.

Entertainment Features :

The CPU will also be beefed up. We’re not sure if this means it will include something more powerful than the Bold’s 624MHz processor or not, but we’d like to think so.

The Blackberry remains the dominant enterprise mobile solution but with so many other options starting to show up, one has to wonder how long this lack of serious innovation can last.

Blackberry 9500 Thunder

BlackBerry Thunder 9500 seems to become the first touchscreen smartphone in RIM's 9000 series. The Canadian manufacturer will be offering the BlackBerry 9500 on Verizon Wireless and Vodafone networks, exclusively. Vodafone has a track record of getting BlackBerry smartphones exclusively in Europe, and an exclusive agreement will obviously also cause extra buzz for Verizon Wireless.

Network and connectivity:

As this phone is yet to be released, all I know about the specifications are mainly rumours or simply common knowledge. The detailed specs will be revealed nearer the release of this phone. So far, all I know is that the Blackberry Thunder is going to have a huge set of features to include GPS, a-GPS, a powerful media player, WiFi and of course high speed internet capabilities.

Camera and Video:

The Blackberry 9500 has 3.2 megapixel camera with variable zoom, auto focus and a powerful flash that also provides continuous lighting when recording video.

Memory and Display:

The BlackBerry Thunder 9500. The BlackBerry Thunder 9500 will feature a huge wide touchscreen with a resolution of 360x480 pixels. It would have been cool to see a BlackBerry 9500 with a slide-out QWERTY thumbboard and a significantly larger screen with landscape mode than the standard 2.5-inch 65K screen we are used to. The display on the Thunder will be covered with a glass surface much similar to the iPhone’s display. It has 1 GB of onboard memory storage and a microSD™/SDHD memory card slot that supports up to 16 GB of additional storage.

Entertainment Features :

The Thunder will run a carrier music store which similar to the iPhone's iTunes store and will allow users to purchase songs from their device. A 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, support for Bluetooth stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP) and dedicated volume controls. It also supports Audio player- AAC, eAAC, MP3, Video player-3GP, MPEG4, FM radio.

I think this phone will be a great success and whether it has problems or not the look of the phone will make Blackberry march into the leaders’ field. I also think that this phone will live up to our expectations just from Blackberry’s history so far they haven’t made a phone that has disappointed me and I really hope that with the Blackberry Thunder 9500 they keep up their almost flawless mobile phone history.

Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition

Thanks to the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition's DVB-H technology, programs burst through the QVGA screen in full-color, crystal clear, sharp images. It's perhaps a strange phone for mobile TV - the 5330's display is a standard 2.4" 240 x 320 pixel panel which isn't exactly huge. The DVB-H picture displays in landscape (wide) mode, so it does make the best use of the limited display. Internal memory of this phone is 70 MB, it canbe expand up to 16GB.

The Nokia 5330 was notable for being an exceptionally ugly device to look at, but the MVTE version has been redone in glossy black with silver highlights and looks much better - Nokia say that there is a glossy white version available too.

Nokia 7230

The Nokia 7230 is a compact slider with stunning looks. Rounded edges and a sleek finish make this Series 40 device easy on they eye at a price that’s even easier on the pocket. It doesn’t do badly on the feature front either whilst the 2.4-inch screen makes the most of the available space.

Size and Weight :

This is a fairly elegant phone. Thanks to its slider format, its front is kept clutter-free and the chrome, gun metal and black colour scheme is simple but effective. Slide it open and a white-on-black keypad is revealed, which again is plain but generally attractive. Closed, the phone measures 98 x 48 x 14.8mm so it’s a fair bit shorter but noticeably fatter than your basic candybar phone – something that's to be expected for a slider, of course. With it open, the phone's length increases to a sizeable 127mm.

Network and connectivity:

The Nokia 7230 is a phone supporting EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 900/1900/2100 (or WCDMA 850/1900/2100 for some regions). It also supports 2G Network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), 3G Network (UMTS 900 / 2100 / 1900). It also supports GPRS (Class 32, 100 kbps), EDGE (Class 32, 296 kbits), Bluetooth (v2.1 with A2DP), USB (v2.0 microUSB).

Camera and Video:

This shoots stills to a resolution of 3.2 megapixels, which is very much an entry level specification. You can choose to upload a photo to the Web direct from the camera. If you’ve shot a still at the top resolution there is quite a wait while the handset prepares it for over the air transmission, and when that’s done your only choice is to share it via Ovi. You can get photos onto other sites, such as Flickr, but you need to fiddle around and find the app, log in to the site, then upload. The same goes for using Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube. There's no camera light and the video recording capabilities are pretty average.

Memory and Display:

Memory is of the micro SD variety – the device comes with a 2GB card – and the phonebook is good for a little-miss-popular 2,000 entries. Out of the box our review handset had 14MB of internal memory free Sadly the card slot is under the battery cover, so you have to power the handset down to do card swapping. It has a 2.4 inches (240 x 320 pixels) display. Display type TFT, which can show 256K colors.

Entertainment Features :

Apps for Nokia 7230 along with Opera Mini for Web browsing, the Ovi Store and a few other bits like a clothing size converter are hidden away in a Collections folder, itself in an Extras folder, which is in the Applications folder you see on the main menu. It is a bit of a Russian dolls approach to organising apps. Music playback is catered for of course, and Nokia has not only built a 3.5mm headset jack into the casing so you can ditch the provided earphones in favour of your own favourites but also put this on the top edge, so that a connected headset does not snag the pocket. The features of this phone are Browser-WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML, Radio-Stereo FM radio with RDS, Games-Snake III, Bounce II, Sudoku II, Rally Start + downloadable, Java-MIDP 2.1. The music player supports MP3/eAAC+/WAV/WMA & the video player supports MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV. It will be available in Graphite, Hot Pink color.

This is a straightforward phone that should be good enough for most people when it comes to mobile Internet, music playback and basic photography.. as well as making phone calls. It's a good looking handset too, and given all of these features we think that it should appeal to both prepay and budget contract customers.

Nokia 5235

A good thing about this phone is that it has adequate connectivity options with the exception of Wi-Fi. Among the more important connectivity options, you have 3G and GPS. The phone’s inbuilt GPS receiver features A-GPS functionality which is fairly responsive and accurate. The Symbian OS onboard is quick and responsive thanks to the 434MHz processor running it. As a music phone, the 5235 performs amazingly well offering users with an audio output that shows good frequency response, low noise and distortion levels and a good dynamic range. It supports 2G Network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), 3G Network (HSDPA 900 / 2100), HSDPA (850 / 1900) or HSDPA 9850 / 2100), CSD, HSCSD, maximum speed 43.2 kbps, GPRS/EGPRS Class B, multislot class 32, maximum speed 177/296kbps (DL/UL), EDGE class B, multislot class 32, maximum speed 177/296 kbps (DL/UL), WCDMA 2100 (maximum speed PS 384/384 kbps), CS 64 kbps, Capability to serve as data modem, Bluetooth v2.0, Support for local and remote SyncML synchronization, High-Speed USB 2.0 (micro USB connector).

Camera and Video:

The phone’s 2MP camera performs decently for 2MP standards but in regard to other better cameras the photos have high noise levels, poor contrast and less resolved detail. The company claims the camera is capable of recording VGA resolution videos at 30 frames-per-second but this is not really the case and the frame rate drops much lower than 30fps to produce highly pixilated and overly compressed videos. There is also the presence of many artifacts and the colour balance of the video is bad.

Memory and Display:

It has an internal memory of 320 MB and microSD, up to 16GB. The device features a 3.2", bright nHD (640 x 360 pixels and 16:9 aspect ration) resistive touch screen and tactile feedback with homescreen featuring Contacts Bar and media bar. The phone has TFT resistive touchscreen which shows 16M colors.

Entertainment Features :

The nusic player of this phone supports MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+, WMA, DRM support WM DRM, OMA DRM 2.0/1.0, FM radio. It also has dedicated music keys. This phone is an excellent music player. It performs most other functions just as well and given the price it is selling at, users could not ask for more.

Nokia 3806

Nokia is strengthening its CDMA portfolio with the announcement of three new CDMA mobile devices: Nokia 6316s, Nokia 3806 and Nokia 1506. Together this new line-up highlights Nokia's continued commitment to CDMA as a major standard in key markets around the world. The Nokia 3806 mobile phone is a simple, GSM, candy bar phone that is currently available only in China and India. While Nokia has made no further announcements regarding the release of this CDMA device in the UK or the US, it is possible that we would see another GSM device with similar features and specifications. Nokia 3806 CDMA is a CDMA phone from Nokia with an elegant classic candybar design.

The newly announced Nokia 3806 CDMA handset clearly emphasizes Nokia’s continuing support to CDMA as the thriving mobile telephony standard that’s as much as force to reckon with GSM networks. China Telecoms, the leading mobile network provider in the whole of China, is expected to carry the handsets on a subscription plan. Its network type CDMA 1x , CDMA 800 , CDMA 2000. It also contains Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP.

Camera and Video:

The Nokia 3806 has a built-in digital camera of 2 mega pixels that can capture still images as well as perform video capture.

Memory and Display:

There’s a microSD slot to expand its equally modest internal memory but only up to 4 GB as per specification, though it may be able to use the large 8 MB microSD cards as most mobile phones can use SD and miniSD cards beyond what they had been specified to. It has the usual 2.2” LCD TFT display with QVGA resolution. It’s small, alright, but it gets the job done where it is needed most, and that’s about navigating and using the rich feature of the handset. While it can play you favourite video, that’s not it main mission.

Entertainment Features :

One stand-out feature of the Nokia 3806 is its pre-loaded Heath assistant application which is essentially a database that offers advice on health problem you may encounter in the course of using the handset such as stress-related issues. The health assistant's actual details are sketchy, but from what we gather, its main purpose is to keep track of daily stress levels. Now, since there is no single specific symptom of stress, we can only assume that the device is capable of keeping track of heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and other related biometrics. It would then compare daily data with what is the established value and determine if the user is stressed or not. In terms of colors available for the Nokia 3806, we’ve got piano black, pure white, and rose gold.

Nokia 6790 surge

The Nokia 6790 Surge Mobile Phone coming in an eye catching design is a new generation handset giving you complete satisfaction. It has all the advanced features you expect from a multimedia mobile phone.

Nokia surge measures a pert 3.8 x 2.3 x 0.6 inches and weighs 4.39 ounces. The Surge is a lot smaller than we expected, measuring just 3.8 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick and 4.3 ounces. Even though the compact size is nice, we weren't so fond of the plasticky and slick feel of the phone, and the battery cover creaks at the slightest amount of pressure.

This Nokia mobile phone includes high clarity 2-megapixel camera can capture images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels, and it offers up to a 4x digital zoom (depending on resolution setting). The Nokia Surge has a 2.4-inch active matrix LCD screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and color depth support up to 16 million colors. It includes an accelerometer for automatic portrait and landscape orientation as well as an ambient light detector that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen. The screen sits above a discrete navigation area, with square five-way navigation pad, two soft navigation keys, and standard send/end keys. The Nokia C3 certainly has its strengths. Its keyboard is excellent, it has a good range of social-networking features and its battery life isn't bad. But it's let down by its dated operating system and lack of 3G support. okia say that the C3 should be available in Slate Grey, Golden White and Hot Pink colour combinations.

Nokia X9

Following on from the mid-range Nokia X6, we could be about to see the launch of the high-end Nokia X9 a similar device in terms of form factor, but packing in the latest features. With concepts offering a stunning design, it could be the perfect handset to take over the mantle from the Nokia 5800. Looking at the concept photographs for the Nokia X9, and this device could be one of Nokia’s most stylish to date. The screen in the images stretches right to the very edge of the handset, giving it a sleek appearance, and rounded edges to the handset also give it a contemporary appearance.

X9 comes with great connectivity options with features like HSDPA, WiFi and GPS. Nokia C5

There’s no denying the Nokia C5 is a great looking and stylish phone. It’s compact, lightweight and a pleasure to use. However, it may have trouble finding the right market, as on the surface the feature-set looks a little pedestrian and it’s not until you start to delve a little deeper than you actually see how powerful it actually is.

Sony Ericsson W995

Camera and Video:

it's the best camera on a Walkman phone yet. The Xenon flash is downgraded to standard LED but most of the other Sony Ericsson features are there, including an image stabiliser and auto focus, as well as smile detection and the marvellous BestPic, which takes seven pics in quick succession, both before and after you press the shutter, to ensure you get the best snap. There's also a 16x digital zoom, macro setting and panorama, though we found this didn't stitch the three images together as easily as some versions of this feature. Pictures were great in comparison with lesser camphones, but not quite up to the top standard of the 8 megapixel brigade – close inspection revealed a modicum of blurring and a bit too much purple fringing on the edges. It didn't seem to handle bright light particularly well either. Video provided better quality than we were expecting, though it's still a drop in standard from the still picture images.

Entertainment Features :

We tend not to dedicate space in a review to bundled software packages, but Sony Ericsson's Media Go deserves a special mention. Similar to iTunes, Media Go creates a library of media files and lets you sync these files with your handset. Unlike iTunes, Media Go does all the leg-work building your library; it will search your PC for compatible files and collect them in Video, Photo and Music categories. The most significant feature of Media Go is the capability to re-encode video files before transferring them to your phone. The W995 is capable of playing MP4 and 3GP files, so Media Go takes all your other files; DivX, Xvid, WMV, etc, and converts them to an optimised MP4 file. This process takes sometime, especially if you want the software to re-encode several feature-length movies, but not having to chase a third-party program for this functionality is a blessing.

Sony Ericsson Satio

Sony Ericsson has finally launched the Satio. The focus of the phone is the high class playback of music and video, as well as photography. The 3" panel in the GT540 is definitely one of the better resistive screens we have used, but the experience can by no means be compared to that of the increasingly popular capacitive displays. Anyway, at least the image quality is very good, not only because of the utilized HVGA resolution, which works great on that screen size, but also thanks to the very rich and saturated colors. We even wondered if it is not AMOLED at one point, but once we looked at it from an angle, we realized we were dreaming. It has internal storage capacity of 130 MB. The iPhone 3GS is definitely a step on from the iPhone 3G. Everything is faster, the camera is extensively improved, and the video shooting is very well done. If you want an iPhone and aren't weighed down by a long existing O2 contract, it's the one to go for. However, if you have the iPhone 3G kitted out with the new iPhone 3.0 software, we may have a preference to wait and see what 2010 brings.

That sounds like a small upgrade - few people have complained that the older model is a slowcoach but the benefits can most clearly be seen in the way your apps boot up faster and run more smoothly.
